The problem
A recommendation inside the result list and a recommendation returned with the result are different products. Both were required.
The approach
I built both in the search engine. In-result recommendations are part of the list. Along-the-result recommendations come back with that list and stay their own set.
The conclusion
The two placements are specified separately. A recommendation inside the list changes the list. A recommendation beside the list leaves the list intact.
